Vet tape, bactine (NOT neosporin), vitamins such as sav-a-chick, and syringes in case you need to feed a duckling said vitamins, sugar water for a quick boost, etc. I'd say that's a decent start.

So I was looking at pine shavings at the regular grocery store just for comparison. They were small shavings (I forget exactly what it was called) and I read somewhere that some people's ducklings eat the shavings. Should I be looking for larger pieces?

I like the kind at our feed store it's called horse bedding and is larger flakes, for just new ducklings I lay a nice layer down in the brooder then place clean old towels over top this way they aren't tempted to try and eat and towels are easy to walk on so for about a week of towels they are ready for shavings. It's when they are learning what to eat and what not you have to be careful Towels can be shook out and washed and reused pretty easy. At the feed store this horse shavings comes in a large bale and is about $5.95
