Getting started w quail

Follow up question - are wire floors ok for quail? Can you have a wire floor with pine shavings over it? Or what’s recommended?
As @Nabiki , has stated, have an area where they can get off the wire.

This enclosure has a plywood floor where the plywood sides are....it is also divided into two seperate enclosures. Overall dimensions are 4'W x 10'L x 16" H
Constructed using treated 2x2's and 1x2's, 2x4's, corrugated roofing sheets, 1" x 1/2" weld wire for sides, 1/2" HC for floor.
Siding wire held on with washers and 1 1/2" roofing screws. Flooring wire has 1" poultry netting staples holding it in place. 1 coat of Thompson water seal and two coats of oil base paint.
Total cost: $300

Thank you, thats super helpful! I think Ill try building something like that rather than a prefab, I’m pretty mistrustful of the quality

i think we're gonna get 1 straight run celadon, 1 wild type, and 2 pearl fees from sw gamebirds. if we get a roo we'll do a breeding project next year, if not we'll get some hatching eggs or young chicks! i think it'd be fun to do chicks 1 time.

edit: they sell hatcheries choice! i like most of the colorings so i think thats what we'll do. its cheaper and more fun to guess what color they all are!

Thinking about trying “natural quail keeping” or a version of, basically stick them in a small aviary with plants and deep litter method

https://www.etsy.com/listing/266715...click_sum=b502dec0&ref=shop_home_recs_1&sts=1 build this thing, plant some shrubs and herbs for them, and then still give them a feeder and waterer and maybe a typical coop set up on the ground or some sort of box thing for them to hide in

So the site was rude and deleted what I wrote, but the short version is I think I’ll build them an aviary :)
gonna do wood or cinder blocks around the bottom, plus wire mesh around the outside walls and a skirt of course. I’m still hoping for chickens but the zoning board keeps cancelling all their meetings :/

Which site was rude?
I use 1x6" treated boards for the baseboards on the pens I build. And I run a 2 ft. wire apron all around the enclosure. It's stapled to the inside of the baseboard. I then use concrete to cover over the wire but you can use dirt or gravel but it needs to be buried deeper than if you cover it with concrete. Dirt and gravel is cheaper but I haven't had any predators dig into a pen.

Curious what your thoughts are about enclosing the bottom of the pen in hardware cloth instead of doing a predator skirt? We're building a 4'x8' outdoor aviary, and I'm thinking we might just cover the entire floor of the pen with hw cloth and then cover that with fill dirt, and not bother with the predator skirt...

It would need to be attached to the bottom of the aviary, not just laid out on the ground and covered with dirt but that would work to keep most predators from digging under the pen.
