This is my first winter with chickens. We have a 16x12 shed with one end for a coop. We livein CT where I'd say the weather is similr to Michigan (I grew up in OH). We do not have any insulation in our coop. We do have small vents in the top and windows that can be opened as needed. Nest boxes are inside, no frozen eggs yet. We started with 5 day old chicksin June, then decided to go for it and added 7 more in Sept. We raised the chicks inside until they were 8 weeks old and then started adding the 7 to the 5 in the coop. It was rough. They are now 29 weeks old and 17 weeks old. AND THEY ARE JUST NOW GETTING ALONG......so I would say you don't want to be raising and adding new chicks all the time. If you get a rooster and let broody hens raise the chicks I think you would be better off. Or like alot of people here you better plan now for multiple coops
. And while you're at it, start thinking about raising a meat birds for food, and a layer for eggs.....that way you can have birds that you prepare for the table and pets that you get attached to that lay your breakfast!
Welcome and Good Luck. Gotta tell you from first hand experience, learning about chickens is FUN and getting chickens was the BEST thing I did last year!
