I can vouch for Delawares being prolific egglayers & friendly birds.
The sexlink breeds are good layers too and my Black Stars are very handsome as well. Not as friendly as the Dels.
My "cuddliest" breed is my Houdan - she follows me like a dog. But she's not the greatest layer - produces a med-large white egg every couple of days.
She is the also only one who has gone broody on me, but my girls are still young.

Where are you located? We have several buff orps, a pair of buff brahma bantams and (new this spring) 8 juvenile gold-laced wyandottes. They are all very sweet and good layers. And thanks to our brahma rooster, we have 16 eggs in the incubator right now. First time trying that
