Hello all, I haven't posted on this thread for awhile. I have a topic open in the feed forum and really wanted to get the opinion here as well. I know Oz has studied feed while making his own mix and I'm sure some of you have too. My feed of preference is southern states super breeder.
400

This is being fed to 16 laying hens and 2 roosters with oyster shell on the ground free choice. Is this a poor feed for all year feeding. I like the higher protein and the fact that it contains animal proteins. The fiber is high as well but the mix contains PrimaLac for healthy digestion and the poop boards don't seem any different that with 16% layer crumble. I get it locally for $13 a 50lbs bag. Any thoughts good or bad.

This is my understanding

A chicken will eat until they have enough essental amino acids and then stop. A high protein diet can cause a chicken to starve as they dont get enough energy.

Layers do best on 15-16% protein and show diminishing egg production on diets higher than 18%. That looks like a chick feed at 21%

If fed with table scraps, cracked corn treats or free ranging, it doesn't have as much impact.

I would also be concerned feeding a roo that much calcium on a long term basis. If you offer free choice calcium, a Calcium inclusion of 1.5% is more than enough.

LOL!!

Amen
Thanks Phage.

I have been rather busy both marketing and actually selling eggs.

I took a little time and tried to work out the whole FaceBook Page thing. I added myself to a few groups, shared some posts from my Coco Poultry Farms page and suddenly I am getting loads of new activity.

I also placed a couple of adverts on a forum as well as on OLX.com.

I just completed another sale for $70 worth of chicks that will be picked up in Bacolod.

Mrs Oz is pocketing the money though - LOL. She is investing it with my brother in law, a very successful stock broker in the Philippines. I am good with that. He has done well with previous money we have sent his way.

The egg house is suddenly getting small. As I am trying to keep all juvies inside until 12 weeks, its getting to be a challenge to house them.

The new brooder will help. It will be 90sq feet of floor space so it will hold 45 "keeper" 8-12 week olds.

The market seems to be split between breeders (which I dont have for sale), 8-12 weekers and younguns. Most people cant afford the older birds but those that can dont blink at the price. This makes the 8-12 week olds the prime sale age.
