Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

West Nile is also spread by mosquitos

being vey new I was not fully aware of how easily things can move from wild birds to my hens. I have just finished dealing with fowl pox. My closed flock is allowed to free range on weekends on our fenced acre of East Texas woodland (pines, palmetto, oaks, yaupon) I lost one to the 'wet' pox but since now one around me has poultry (or they have illicit poultry) it was moved in from wild birds via mosquito or foraging grounds. There are wild ducks, geese and pelicans that migrate from Mexico to Canada and back that come through the neighborhood lakes.

fowl pox is a bugger - the vaccine is very cheap and easy to administer though

Yes unfortunately I did learn that but I would have been ahead of it if I had know more about recommended vaccinations given past day olds. I think with avian flu though most people like me would not know what they were dealing with and since backyard chickens don't go to the vet I as an inexperienced owner wouldn't know what I had or who I would contact.

every state has NPIP people - if you contact them they will tell you the agency that will help you.

most states offer necropsy for birds for nothing or next to nothing

Hi Oz, coming out of lurkdom to ask some questions about chick vaccinations (since you have built such a great vaccine program and I can't find the information anywhere)

I want to offer vaccinations for Mareks, Coccidosis and MG-CRD on my day old chicks. I have heard that the Mareks vaccine can't be stored once it is mixed and is difficult to divide with accuracy. I can't find anything on whether the same is true for the Coccidosis and the MG-CRD vaccines. Do you happen to know the answer to this? I also have not been able to find whether I can give all three of these vaccines to turkey poults as well. I am also curious about whether I can give all of these vaccines on day 1 or if they need to be spaced out (since I would like to vaccinate and then get them off to their new homes).

I appreciate your help!

pretty much any vaccine that you have to mix is a one time thing
with mareks you can pull the dried disk out of the bial, divide into 4 and place in sterile secimen containers
mg vac you can store - same with cholera and coryza as they are stable liquids
