We get young broad-winged hawks in our neighborhood (guess their parents come back each year to nest). Once the young ones are old enough to leave the nest they seem to try and go for our chickens, but I've found they're not strong enough to actually pick them up. My last bird RAN with the hawk attached to her back. I was doing dishes in the kitchen and heard the commotion... saw that hawk. I think she actually took some feathers off the hawk in the struggle. He tore her skin good, but she lived. Can't even tell by now.
Young broad-winged hawks look and sound different from your red tail hawk... very distinct call. I hear them in the trees calling back and forth to eachother around September/October. Red tail hawks don't bother with my flock, although I've seen them circle above the tree line. Apparently the broad-winged normally eat smaller prey, so it's probably a rookie mistake for them to try a chicken
I would probably be able to free range the rest of the year... but the kids kinda like their grass chicken poop free and they are rough on the garden
I've got all these weeds and they go for the stuff I dont want them to have.
