how bloody annoying!! lol

so this week the birds have really turned it on. I am spending 12W of electricity - 2 x 6 watt bulbs to give them an hour of light.

I went from 5 eggs a day to 17 eggs today. The Barred Rocks, RIR, Easter Eggers, BBS Orps, Jersey Giants all have eggs going into the bator, I even got a pullet egg out 18 week old of a white leghorn.

I have a 16 day old buff orp.....

maybe its a roo.

Quote: awesome! I will one day carry scale out for our brahma too! also at what age do you process? We want to switch out our Blue roo with one we have growing out, he is over (EDIT) a year old though so will have to brine for several days and probably slow roast. Oh and its funny you say Turkey, lol when my boys protect their gals I swear they are PART turkey! spreading that tail around, so beautifully too! But no time for watching tails, I gotta watch their eyes LMAO!! seriously though, they are not mean at all unless you mess with the hens!
This is our buddy Splash we are growing out.... not the stances? lol I have my eye on him for sure the turd! He better not be mean or I will cry!

i know a guy who put a fiberglass roof on his coop
it looked like normal galv. GI sheet but it let a bunch of light in for his flock
i have been thinking about getting a couple sheets & adding "sky lights" to one of my coops
might help out on the egg production
i already added an extra window to my other big coop
it really shines a bunch of light rite on their roosts
which allows the birds to have a longer day without adding lights

what day day you going wheels up this month OZ?

oh wow he does look good!
i like to have a pair of roosters if possible in each coop
they keep each other in check so they are not thinking about attacking me or the wife
for slow growing breeds like orpingtons we like to wait till they are 20 to 25 weeks old.
at 30 / 40 weeks they really have some meat on them.......

we thought we had mostly hens on this last batch till their combs started getting really big
he.gif

only 2 looked to be roosters.......nope all 7 from this new line we added were boys
we had even sold off a few smaller girls to make room for the larger part english buffs
looks like that was a bad move

oh well we now have some new buff peeps so they should be laying by June/july
i like to really cut my numbers back for winter
feed cost money after all

Quote: that is a great idea, how many hens do you have two boys with?
This young splash just messed up his daddy's comb, so I think he is winning the battle to kingdom lol
you would think they would know each other ha ha ha

I hear ya on the feed, its killing me and they still arent paying for it or working for it! darn chicken!
