Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

400

7 out of 12 hatched

We have been hatching up a storm down on cocobeach. We have 40 chicks for the chicken mission and more hatching every 4 days.

thats the good news.....

The less than good news is I was woken up by a slew of messages. Caprino, our Nubian buck decided to tip over and die. At breakfast he looked fine. A 2 pm dead.

I did a remote necropsy at Bernies suggestion. It appears to have been pulmonary odema caused by obstructed urinary tract by renal calculai.

Two steps forward, one step back.

Sorry to hear that :(
At least you have one or more of his babies on the way. Maybe a boy, though you probably want to replace him ASAP.

In the Phil's in this sort of situation does he get buried or recycled?

I did some reading on this because someone took me to task about not feeding ammonium Chloride to my Wether goats.... For what its worth he probably had the problem before you got him.... Of course you figured that out already but I had to say it for other people who don't have goats.

Here is a simple article on the subject.... Be warned it has goat parts from an autopsy.

I was taken to task bout not feeding Ammonium Chloride but there are a couple of others discussed in the article..... Along with the whole diet salt.... calcium phosphorous ratio.... Which I happen to be good with it.... I have had my goats now seven years all three are Wethers... No issues to date and I still haven't been able to locate Ammonium Chloride locally.

One of the remedies for goats that have "Issues" with stones is to snip off the pizzle that is on the end of the penis. Do sheep have these issues?

Sorry for caprino. My grandfather before used to give salt to his farm animals every week. In my observation for his carabaos a handful. In the yard where he kept his animals at night there is a big flat top stone where he always put salt for his animals to lick anytime since they are used to it already.
