Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

We will overcome.

I will have some pics taken of the survivors later today. Sadly the chicks were scheduled to move to a coop today. All the coops are cat proof.

The brooder had a small hole in the plastic mesh where a an oversided brooder light had melted the plastic mesh.

The cat must have got in through the small gap between the wall and the tin roof.

Tonight we shall have a special treat for cats set up in several locations with the dogs tied up.

Sorry for your losses Oz... Really tough break when a small oversight (melted mesh) leads to that kind of devastation... Hope the guilty culprit enjoys some of those sardines this evening.

We thought the room was secure. I am stunned that the cat fit through that space.

So sorry Oz.............hope there are no more loses.

There will always be losses. Its part of chickening. Normally it does not phase me but senseless massacre is tough. If I buy eggs - its just part of business and I "man-up" and take it. But when the eggs are given to me, they have somebody elses hopes and dreams attached and I feel a huge responsibility to fulfill them. Getting them out of their shell is such a feat and to lose them to a predator is shameful.

Normally chicks their age would haf been turfed into a coop a week or two ago. These were being "protected". There were also another 3 brooders with a hundred mutt chicks in them. There was only a hole in the immigrants brooder.
