Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

I fell behind in this thread, then before I could catch up I fell behind even more. Now, I see why.

Very sorry to hear about the loss of precious cargo Oz. We never lost one to the local cats, but plenty had tried. Hope there is still enough to be able to push on with building stocks.

thanks Ben. Unfortunately in another twist, the remaing birds from that batch were killed off.

legbars will have to wait.

a few scenes from the garden

Oh no Oz, I think your eggplants don't conform to EU standards

But they do look tasty. And the kids seem to like the playhouse. And those veggie gardens look pretty darn good too, I love the fence around it.

a busy few days at the farm

Seedlings from the nursery were planted. A few replacement fruit trees for the ones that did not take. Overall we have had good success with mixing our compost with local sandy soil and then dropping the seedling into it.

Two leaking chicken nipples were repaired

All coops were inspected for possible cat entrance sites and were fortified. Ac ouple of pieces of green mesh that had become brittle in the sun were swapped out.

3 sets Sardines with a special present were laid out - 50% consumed on the first night.

Veggie gardens that were rapidly becoming over run with weeds were thinned. With all the rain, its been a constant battle.

Young trees had pal-pal ( a small fence) placed around them to prevent accidental death by a goat that gets off his/her leash.

Today Dominic is re-doing the fishing net fence on the first grow out pen built by Bernie. Dominics technique is to use rope woven through the mesh top and bottom to enable it to be stretched and supported. The lower rope gets staked to the ground. We had to play musical coops. Thewe moved the layers into tighter quarters for a few days then piled the 100 birds into the first duplex we built. It will take two days before we can get them back but its not too tight for that short amount of time.

I just ordered 500 hollow blocks and 20 sacks of cement to start phase II of the piggery. We need to extend it 16 feet. This will give us more room for the farrowing pens and also to more pig pens as we plan to keep a few from each litter to breed with to develop our line of terminal boars. Coco Swine Breeders is now registered as well.

We have three coconut trees identified for the lumber. 4"x4", 2"x4", 2"x3" and 2"x2" lengths will be milled for the project

We also have some trunks of young coconut trees that we were given. The head (heart of coconut palm) was harvested for a delicacy called lumpia ubod.

The lumber from trees at that age (10 years) is not the best and does not weather well but it will be fine for 2x2 roosts and small projects under cover.

Mrs Oz is in the process of booking a carpenter.

i just about have my goat house finished but i don't think the goats will use it

they seem happy in the big coop with the buff orpingtons

so i think i'll use the soon to be finished building to house another breed

my 50/50 SOP buff pullets are now laying, so soon it will be time to start setting some of their eggs

Maybe smaller doors? isn't goat feed cheaper then chicken feed?
Anyways Good Luck!

the goats can already sneak out the chicken door

if i make it any smaller the rooster will be stuck in the coop

goat feed runs me $14.00

but i only give each of em a handful in the morning

after that the goats are on bush trimming duty

so they get no further feed

they do steal a little chicken feed but only till it is all eaten

i feed twice a day & that's it.

this makes em forage better
