The final candling _ day seven was pure carnage. we wend from 133 chicken eggs to 49. Loads of clears, some blood rings. Whole breeds gone. - No Brahmas or swedish flowers made it. Add to that most of the turkey eggs, some of the ducks and a few peafowl and there were 150 eggs in the discard pile. Mrs Oz went weak at the knees to think of all my efforts shot sown with 3 AAA batteries and a light emitting diode.

For me - it was business as usual. Bernie know knows the difference between a viable and a blood ring.It also makes me feel better that they were not killed by us - more likely by the heat wave temps in the USA during transit and the damages associated with air travel.

We started with 384. Down to 230. The Partridge are hard to candle so I expect a lot of late loss there.

If the 49 chicken eggs turn into 30 chicks I will be over the moon.

Maybe I can deflect some of Mrs. Oz's consternation - if you tell her all those losses pale to stepping on a chick and killing it, like that crazy grey-eyed BYCer.

Yup. Milling mass of chicks didn't all part the way I anticipated when I {I thought} I needed to get somewhere quickly. One of Sparkle's current four.

I just hate the death flap, after which you know there's nothing to be done.

At least it was a cockerel.......




Oz, I know you expend a whole lotta time, effort and expense on your Endeavors - far beyond my paltry experiences, BUT I approach each hatch with the clear expectation of nothing hatching. Each live hatchling is a miracle of nature, certainly nothing I could possibly create on my own.

Hmmm. Prolly doesn't make sense. Never mind. Move along, nothing to see here.

after a zero hatch one time, i treat all hatches as you do. I am still trying to maximize my technique though.

the nn are very cute. the black one is very black I will go through the pics and try and get a pick of the other nn. I could not get a decent pic of the splash marans, the best I could do was its butt and very feathered legs.

The peafowl could be brilliant or aweful. They had hints of life but not bursting with veins. I will have Bernie re-candle them in a week but I am quietly hoping

It looks like Bernie is going to be the local chicken 'go to' man, might want to up his pay a bit!
