Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

It was a tough call but I want to give the people coming a good experience and yes - we need point of lay. If not I would have to provide enough feed to get them there and the number that ended up in a pot before they had a chance to prove their worth would be too high.

On a positive note. We have set 102 crossbreed eggs since Jan 4. 70 of which are far enough along to candle and 60 of those 70 are progressing. We should have a 150 set by the end of the month. I also have 20 that are 8 weeks. We should be good to go with the postponed trip.

the July tickets are 1250. September are 861.

I am ok with either trip or even both if there is interest. I will be going anyway

Hope all goes uneventfully. I'm sure Bernie is getting a workout today! LOL!
Bernie was a pro.

The thing about Mareks vaccine is that its only good for one hour after it is mixed so you cant dilly-dally. They vaccinated 70 birds in 40 mins

Just wanted to say I'm back around. Last year went south on the family here. And the winter is taking its toll. But me and the family are still going. Very sever weather this winter as well as untold amounts of predators have took a lot out of our flock. So its gonna be a mega hatch spring I hope. Well I'll need to be get my birds back. But at least I still have most of my 1st year birds. A lot of my older ones didn't make the winter. But I do have a favorite bird of the all, well looks anyway. She was one of my feather footed crosses. I'll have to get some pics up sometime if my phone don't freeze, and I ain't talking tech issues either.
On the plus side we are exspecting another little girl in June. And our oldest has been excepted to his college of choice. Pretty much on free academic scholarships from a lot of places. He's in the top 5% ACT scores in the nation. And our oldest daughter made it into a scholarship program he has been in for 2 1/2 years. SO we taking the bad with the good and evening out and all of it one day at a time.

Never got to a lot of the remodeling we planned last year. Lost my mother in July and we been fighting getting everything taken care of since.

Little ones still love the birds but went from 12ish adults free ranging to around 50-60 now and they get spooked when they go outside and the flock begins swooping in. And occasionally they get a peck when birds are looking for a treat. Garage became a temp coop because remodeling was halted and is best place to keep em protected from elements, and predators. Which in the fall even consisted of a BIG owl. Caught him one night in the drive trying to kill a hen. He must of ventured INTO the coop to get her because only the Guineas and a couple young birds ever roosted outside and she was one of my older BA's. But lately its been stray cats. Other than the owl last year was 90% cat problem. Got the wild animals in check and the domestics start in. Well we'll make do somehow. Still have the LG (x2) and the homemade with 100 ish egg cap. SO when weather permits I'll be hatching everything for awhile.

Sorry for being long winded. Just wanted say hey I am back. Will try check in often.

The chicken mission will have to be postponed.

Basically, due to the power outages caused by Typhoon Yolanda, we lost all the chicks earmaked for the mission. We were then halted by a all out molt and no egg production.

I am currently incubating every egg being laid but they wont be point of lay till June.

I will leave it up to the people who would like to go to decide if they want to go in July - tickets will be more epensive or wait until September.

My apologies but mother nature is more powerful than all of us.

My trips will continue but I feel that the mission wont really work without adequate chickens.

Wow, got 'em some years apart! We're having a girl in April as well, other kiddos are 2 and 6 though. Good to hear your eldest are doing so well.

We lost my mom and my mother-in-law last summer too (talk about weird coincidences, huh?). It's been a year..

This winter has been outrageous, it may not be as cold as it's over there, but definitely unusual. How cold has it been over there? I'm sure the weather is making you lose birds... hungry animals know how to find you, sadly.

Here's to a better 2014.
