Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Hat tip to you sir.

Not suggesting beinf as hard core as the big guys, but you have something special, and the more 'knock off's' of something floating about takes the shine off.

Saying that, you seem very well priced at the numbers you are looking at for a sex linked, prolific layer in an area what thats hard to come by.

Are you hoping to also remove broody tendencies?
The removal of broodiing tendencies is a little contentious with me. Great for production but.....

Firstly, even if I did, incubating eggs under a local chicken will serve the same purpose. New Hampshires have a far greater brooding drive than a RIR but are a bigger bird an their eggs are huge. The rocks are pretty low on the broody side. If I wanted to stomp the broodiness oit of the Visaya, an initial cross with a brown leghorn may be the way to go.

Sticking my nose in here and un-lurking, finally. SWORE to myself that I wasn't going to read the last couple pages until I'd at least made it halfway through! As my other tab currently reads.. *checks* page 389, I'm due.

Hi everyone!

Its good to have Mrs Oz back at CocoBeach getting things guided along.

Dominic is doing well.

The boar has been getting mutt eggs mutt eggs. He just got his third shot of vit b complex. It was a short dated vial i bought from jeffers for a few bucks. I will be buying more for sure.

I am making inquiries into buying semen in Luzon if he does not get to full strength by the end of the week. He can become someone elses problem or adobo - I just have no space for a cute friendly boar that is weak. I will earn money on his weight gain if i sell him so its not a loss. We just need a reliable source of semen - no comments from "the gentleman from NH".

Trying to get a carpenter and mason to finish the piggery has been tough. We have had two flake on us. A third came by today and will start Saturday. In the meantime Tanoy has filled the subfloor area with sand from the new trash pit - a 2mx2mx2m hole for our non degradable or recyclable waste. We thought about just getting Tanoy and the boys to do the concreting but Tanoy was surprised we were wanting to put rebar in the concrete floor. - he is just a laborer still. He has been given instruction on how to lay and tie the rebar - that should keep him busy for 2 days

The local veggie garden is doing really well. The imported seed garden has mixed results, The corn, lima beans, okra and some tomatoes are doing well. The leave veggies not so good. We will try a couple of other varieties. Its all part of the learning.

The days are very hot right now. Low to mid 90s and 80% humidity. Its the hottest month of the year. The rains in late June bring a drop in temp back to the mid-high 80s. Its amazing how five degrees can make all the difference.

Our first quail hatched from our eggs are in the brooder. The ducks finally left the brooder house today. All are rejoicing and are probably secretly hoping for a zero hatch om the scovie eggs Dom decided to set 10 days ago. They get candled tonight along with the 200 other eggs he set at the same time . We should have chukar and guineas hatch this week and chickens next week.

Any preference to your sex link traits? Black or red? feather sexing perhaps?

I was looking very some tables last night but it's hard to know where to start, especially not know much about the local breed you want to include.

Considered kind of short cutting and buying Hybrid parent stock? I guess it's an exhaustible effort then. Hmmmm. I need to read more about it.

I am hopeless with chicken genetics and coloring.

I finally started playing with http://kippenjungle.nl/kruising.html,

You can select two birds and see what the cross will look like. You can use that cross and put it over another color - then it gets interesting lol.
Oz, you can make some neat sex linked and auto sexing crosses with cream legbars. Granted, they will make a more colorful egg basket, but that might be a special market in itself. I mean, sex-linked easter eggers are a pretty hot commodity around here. They have the leghorn blood in them and lay really well. The few I have lay every day. They are small birds though, so perhaps the cross should be made with a dual purpose that fits the genetics for the auto or sexlinked plan.

I have thought about that. There is not much I can find on maintining the Autosexing of Legbars, cambars etc on crossing. If it could be done, it may be a great first cross with the local bird to boost egg production and then build size next cross.

I am hoping Phage will jump in as she has lots of chicken science.
