Thanks for the tip - I'll check out Ben's diary also. And, I MUST blame someone else for the Silkie eggs! To take personal responsibility would be to admit that I just couldn't help myself! What I didn't say is that I have another bid in on another batch of Silkie eggs AND more Barred Holland eggs... sigh. Oh well, I haven't hatched chicks in a year - been focusing on quail lately. Those little buggers taste GOOD and sooo easy to process.

Can't wait for pictures! No worries about me ever posting cat pics...cats creep me out. Nothing against any cat lovers!! But no promises that I won't post a grandbaby pic every now and then ... they have me wrapped around their fingers! They love coming to "the farm" and helping out. I swear they break more eggs than they ever get to the house - but in the whole grand scheme of things - who cares! I can get a new egg every day, but can never replace a grandchild's joy when they find an egg.

and p.s. I'm not a nurse - but DH is!

I have been known to low bid on two like auctions only to win both.

Bens is truly a great read - Highs and lows.

Sally Sunshines is also great as a diary for the first few hundred pages then it becomes a great discussion thread on all things incubating

Things have been quite for us lately, but things took a turn when we scored a broody yesterday....already arranging some eggs for her

So OZ have you looked into broiler hatching eggs? I've researching and seems they sell them to the commercial hatcheries but I think they also sell to others and wondered if it would be viable option instead of buying chicks

I actually have some red ranger eggs from Dunlap hatchery in this run (it was supposed to be a secret). They grow almost as fast as the white frankenchickens (which they also sell) but are not quite as an abomination that they can carry themselves around as they get past 12 weeks and even go onto breed. I am not sure how the second generation turn out but I am hoping to cross them. Loads of people hatch out cornish crosses - I think even Odyssey sells the eggs.

Kabir and Sasso hybrid varieties are available in the Phils but only as chicks and I will only introduce birds into my flock that I hatch myself.

I check in on you every day. I have to make sure you are doing Ok. Sal is a good looking bird! You need to put they Wyandotte in a crock pot.

Yeah she is a non producer, hard to believe. Wife won't let me move her on in anyway as she is a good looker. Feeding a garden ornament!

She makes fertilizer though... And keeps away snails from your garden? I'm not saying that a replacement bird wouldn't do that too, cheaper even due to lower feed costs while it's little... But she sure is pretty.

Yep - he's been a nurse for a looooong time, lol. We are pushing the end of our 5th decade of life and he's been doing nursing for 35+ years. He's been in home health care management for quite awhile now and fairly recently mentioned that he misses being in a hospital. I told him that since we are in the twilight of our working years that he should do whatever makes him happy. Retirement dreams are fairly frequent these days - but we've still got awhile to go.

I've been watching your discussion on meaties. I've got a few out there right now that have managed to evade the ax so I was thinking (dangerous, I know) of hanging on to a few of the ones with the best legs and putting a Red Dorking roo over 'em. I love the Dorkings and they butcher out well, but are sloooooow growers. Just a thought...

I've been meaning to look at Sally Sunshines diary also - so thanks for the suggestion.

Need to go check ebay and see how those two auctions are going... what was I thinking???

I took some year old cornish rock cross meatie roosters and put them over black sex link hens, the babies didn't grow quit as fast as the meaties but did grow faster then my regular chicks and ended up pretty big. I also took a cornish rock cross meatie hen and crossed her to a buff orpington rooster and had the same out come.
