Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

No it's not a real good start.

We have sat her down twice. The first time after the cell phone incident. I explained that she needs do differentiate a work phone from a personal phone. It's a common mistake even in the west with work phones and laptops so I have her the benefit of doubt and blamed myself for not giving clearer parameters.

As i said, salary advances are also common. We have it because we don't want to have them with no money but explained that we won't be doing it again next pay day and they must learn to live within their means.

I also had a counseling session over the change. I explained how every peso must be accounted for. That normally we would leave them with petty cash but can't do it if they take advances or can't account for the money we give them.

Another beautiful morning that will turn into a hot day. It should hit 90 today. Humidity will be in the seventies.

We replaced the half inch pipe to the coops with one inch yesterday afternoon. It did the trick. 4 times as much flow from the drum to the coops.

More chicken sorting today. I hope to be able to start selling again by Christmas. I have an order for 50 RIR pullets and ten roos along with a list of quads.

The piglets all doubled in weight in their first seven days. I am exceedingly happy with that. We should get two nice gilts to keep for the next generation of breed improvement. Mama is just about pure Landrace so if these girls grow at the rate of a good pig in the USA, then we will breed them with another high quality boar and keep a barrow piglet intact as our first boar for hire.

The other pigs are all doing well. I expect lots of piglets by Christmas.

The goats seem to be doing really nicely. They are getting ipilipget branches every day. It's a great source of protein at around 22%. They also get a little corn meal each day. I don't feed them rice bran as it has high phosphorus. I don't want any more renal calculi. In four months we will see how buck roger does as a sire. I will sell or eat the two pure native does as the next generation of does are weaned. We currently have 8 does including doelings. Two more generations of pure dairy buck should give us some nice dairy girls. I just want six keepers. My issue then will be keeping new genetics in the paternal side unless I keep more goats just to breed and sell. We shall see. I did have fifty ipil ipil trees planted before the rainy season. Once they grow I should be able to support more goats without paying for a lot of feed.

Today we are releasing the 16 week old Guinea Fowls "into the wild". They have a pinioned wing so hopefully they will remain in the compound. Its an experiment and I am prepared to lose a few.

Another busy day at CocoBeach

OK viewers

I need help.

I have a mix of white pullets.

All have white ear lobes. Some have yellow legs, some have gray legs some have yellow.

Possible breeds

White Rock
Leghorn
California white

???

Cheers

We had a fun day chicken sorting. I had to go through all the birds that were in grow out pens and coop them with the adults of the same breeds

I can't seem to hatch an Ameraucana roster. I have over a dozen hens. I have Black Copper Marans too in there but once the near ready to lay birds start, I will have to add a cuckoo marans. At least I can produce easter eggers.

Another possibility would be a white egg roo. I have a black Andalusians that I could use. Thoughts?

Two mixed roosters hit the freezer tonight. I have seven more marked for eating. There are also three adult scovie drakes that will become adobo.

Today's roos are a year old so they will be curry. Tomorrow we will kill three six months old lads.

I have a demand for olive eggers. I would like to also produce blue eggers. And I am not sure if I cross a blue egg girl with a white egg too if I will end up with blue or white egg layers. I would divide up the girls into two pens though to be sure I know which is which.

Five look alot more like tailed Araucana as they have very district tufts. The others are hatchery grade pseudo ameraucanas.

I would charge the same as the purebreds though.

I am hoping to bring over a few dozen Ameraucana, barred rocks and buff orps next trip. I need to bolster my stock.

In the spring I will do a mega shipment as my last big one.

Cream legbars
Austalorps
Rhode island whites
New Hampshire
Delawares
Silver laced wyandotte

Most of those are to get my sex link production business up and running. The losses on Dominic's watch set me back a year.
