Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Slightly different Christmas shopping list than what people are used to... I hope you find everything.

Pretty sure most BYCers have similar wishes

The next stage of getting the flock out of here will be Nov 25. I tried to get to the Phils for thanksgiving but with traveling accros the international date line, i will be arriving on the 27th.

thats ok. my return is dec 27 and a visa is just good for 30 days so its perfect

My shopping list is...

Buff Orps
Ameraucanas
Creme Legbars
Silver Laced Wyandottes
New Hampshires
Delawares
Rhode Island Whites
i'm chicken sitting this week (buffs from my line)

i'm getting between 6 & 9 extra eggs a day

if only you were going sooner OZ

this gig ends on Nov 17th

The great egg hunt is on..

Buff Orps - A certain non-ruminent named BYCer has my Orps covered.
Ameraucanas - I had what most would call a dream hatch - twice. Of all the eggs that hatched I ended up with all pullets. I am currenly housing my blue layers with a BCM roo to get olive eggers but I need a blue egg roo or three.
Creme Legbars - I will pobably hold off on these precious babies untill I am 100% re-established. Knowlwdge of the breed is very limited in the Phils.

The silver gene birds:
Silver Laced Wyandottes
Delawares
Rhode Island Whites
These three are the best (to my knowledge) to produce red sex links. Given the amount of red sex links out there, its surprising how few of these birds I can find. I really only need one of the breeds.
My other option is to focus on barred rocks and produce black sex links. Funny thing is the market wants red colored chickens that lay brown eggs.

New Hampshires - I have a gorgeous NH roo. I just need some girls for him (and a few more roos for the sex link projects)

I have a line on a decent number of barred rocks that will boost my numbers.
I also have some decent RIR that I will get if I cant fill the order with my wish list.

Tomorrow is another day.

Speaking of tomorrow - as we speak, (tomorrow in the Phils) there are two bottles of New Hampshire/Pietrains semen traveling by bus from Bacolod to Kabankalan for pick up by Bernie. My first sow has weaned her babies and will be ready for insemination tomorrow.

Time flies

Oz, could white Rocks take the place of Rhode Island whites? Might be easier to get.
The problem with white rocks is that some lines have white dominant rather than white recessive. You cannot tell by looking at them. Basically you have to cross them with a red roo, when they hatch, band what you think are male and female, then wait till they grow and see if you got a line thats white recessive or dominant. If its dominant, start again with another line. Smae goes for many breeds includinh white orps and JG. White Leghorns are white dominant
