Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

The one thing that stinks about being caught up on this thread is the waiting game that ensues until the next post.

Lol, yep, my thoughts exactly

My apologies

I will give a report late this evening

There is always a lot going on at CocoBeach.

I am concerned that Dodong is getting a little too busy. On the weekend we suggested that we get him help – at least to perform some maintenance that needs to be done. He was trying to say he can cope with the work but there are signs brewing that indicate otherwise. We are advertising for a graduate of degree program in agriculture and animal science. We are also trying to find a laborer to help out with maintenance stuff.

Our quail suddenly sprung into life as layers this week. I had been threatening to have a quail processing day the last couple of trips but never had the freezer space. We went from no eggs then 12, 14, 16 and now 21. Coturnix quail are normally not seasonal but its interesting that they kicked in the same week as the Guineas.

The free range guineas are also laying. We found a nest with 6 eggs. They are crafty buggers so we will be on the lookout for them as they hide eggs and then set them with the penned birds.

The new larger capacity hatcher-bator is complete and we are in the process checking temps. We shall do a live run this weekend.

Well - on a micro-chicken-raising note, I just ordered an incubator! I had to tell someone, because my family is not really into chickens.

I'm excited to finally try and hatch some chicks myself, and this will push me to get the coop and run fixed up. I ordered an ecoglow brooder too, so it will be fun to try out all the new toys.

Thanks for listening

congratulations

be very wary of chicken math. all i wanted was a few eggs for breakfast.

what are you planning to hatch?

Eye candy for the yard and egg basket (Mottled Ameraucana, Black Copper or Blue Copper Marans), and would like to start raising Russian Orloff. I've wanted them for years!

Now that I finally have space and time, I can give it a shot.
