More Piglets

After the nightmare delivery of Pig 3 last time, I was all set to cull her but she is such a monster pig I wantd to give her one more chance

Mrs Oz was the AI tech. She did great!

So far we have 1 mummified loss and 13 live births. Still farrowing. 

8 males and 5 females. 

Pig 3 is redeemed

last time Pig 3 was very large - a full grade 5 in back fat. This alone would have caused problems. Her Labia majora was then torn as she faught the boys into the farrowing pen. When I got to the Phils 7 days before the farrowig, it was in a bad way. We cleaned out the fly blown tissue and irrigated the wound. It cleaned up quickly but was still raw and swollen. The combination cased a narrow birth canal. She could not deliver the first piglet and required assistance. As the piglet squeezed through, she lunged forward, pulling tight the umbilical cord. I would say this caused the placenta to lift and the blood to flow.

When I treated her, I had to make a decision to save her an the cost of possibley losing piglets. She ended up with 40 IU of pitocin. It shut down everything and we had a spree of stillborns.

My decision to keep her was based on how the vagina healed.

When I arrived this time, she was huge again. I tasked Ompoy with dropping her to a grade 4 in 3 weeks.

He did well.

It looks like she stopped at 13 live piglets. They are all drinking well. she delivered them in 3.5 hours.

She may get another reprieve from the sausage factory but realistically, I need to keep progressing in my breeding program.

Its a tough call.

I think your statement should have been "HOLY SUPER SOW, BATMAN."

She reminds me of my days on the farm when we were raising feeder pigs. We had 6 or 7 sows that would always deliver 14 or more pigs. If she produces a great delivery the next time, it will be time to consider some of her gilts as next generation SUPER SOWS. Congrats.

27 live piglets from 2 sows. Its pig 2's turn tomorrow.

the landrace crossed with pietrains threw all white offspring.

in the meantime Super Typhoon Dodong is heading for the Northen part of the Philippines while our Dodong is hatching chickens in the south.

i am glad we have the three guys there now!

with the sale of 6 more than budget piglets, i can build a small addition to house her lol

my problem is space. I only have 5 pens that are 12x8 three pens 3x6 and 1 pen 6x6

if we add a 28x16 addition to the main piggery, i can add five 8x8 pens by relocating farrowing units.
