Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

We gave it a good college try. Thats all we can do.

Livestock means dead stock,

In my career I have seen so much death that I get that its part of life and am rarely upset by it. I would just have prefered a lesser dairy goat percentage to be that statistic but we cant control that randomness either.

Its hard on the boys though. They are strained with the pig that was 3 days late and they have named the doeling that was abandoned as "miracle". Not good but humans tend to get attached.

It IS GOOD to get attached, Oz. I understand why you say it's not, but if the heart gets steeled against compassion and love, then it's only job is pumping blood. Loving animals is a sure indication of a tender, caring person and deepens his/her ability to love another person. It breaks my heart to see someone that has conditioned his/herself not to feel love, no matter the situation. I think your guys are tender hearted, compassionate men and that is the kind of people you want working for you. If you stop them from getting attached to the animals, they may also resist getting attached to you and your family..... just my thoughts.

I understand what you are saying. My lack of emotion over death is not a numbness to death but rather a philosophical approach. I love life. I fight to save it. I celebrate the victory when we deny death.

I also respect that death must come to all. When it happens, I pause, salute the life that was, and move on.

I*m with you Oz. A life interrupted too early is never a good thing, but I think that in many cases death is a mercy, especially when it comes to end suffering. That's an interesting difference of view between the US and Europe. I've found that in the States people tend to value life above all else, while over here it's more common to value quality of life instead. Owners of three legged dogs in the States tend to be seen as merciful, while I would see that as causing unnecessary suffering to the dog.

To me, one of the greatest acts of love toward an animal is to let it die a dignified death instead of prolonging it's life for selfish reasons. But then again, I can understand why others think differently.

That's very similar to the UK approach, if you have an animal that is very sick it is often considered kinder to euthanise it.

I agree with all the above comments. I was only speaking to the emotional attachment to animals. Oz said it was not good for his guys to get attached to the animals they care for. Getting attached means you work harder to save the life and grieve harder when your efforts fail. It also means that you care enough to let it go, when it is suffering or loses it's quality of life. I kmow that there are worse things than death.

The name was supposed to be Nonoy but as thats the nick name of the Phils Prez, they renamed it Nona.

The year of Yolanda there were more than double the named storms.

The EL Nino causes a drought in the tropics

If the names get in to the O's it could be OMG. I was reading information about the predictions of the weather this year because of El Nino. And all say it could be a worst year in California this year than it was back in 97 - 98. They were also saying that it was really screwing up all of the weather patterns through out the tropical Pacific area.
