I have 4 hens that I usually have to herd them into the coop at night. My dad came to visit who has chickens says he has no Idea why they don't go in on their own all the time. One thought was that I am inconsistent on the times I close them up. Sometimes 5 sometimes 7pm, and sometimes as late as 9pm depending on my work schedule. I think they like it in there are they are always on the roosts and I also keep food and water inside as well. Any tips on how I can get them to go in on their own?

A friend of mine was told to lock the chickens in the hen house for 48 hours when you get them. Then they will know that it is the place to go at bedtime.

Not sure if this would work with an established flock, but I did it when I moved my young girls outside and it worked well.

The only thing I would worry about is that they are adult and might get irritated if they feel crowded for two days. You could always provide lots of treats and distraction.

I usually lock mine in the coop for several days then let them out and most will get the idea that is where they need to go at night. If not then lock them in for another day or two and then they should all get the idea.

The Hens are about 2 to 3 months old. Perhaps not too late. I will give it a try. Thanks
