The breeder figures one of her meat bird chicks must have gotten mixed into the ameraucana tray. So now I guess we know - not a new line of giant, blue-ostrich-egg-laying ameraucanas after all. Sigh.

And not that I'm opposed to having meat birds, but everybody knows their fate from day one. I'm not sure how we're going to eat poor André!

AFAIK the only meat bird that gets that big that fast are CornishX,

I'm afraid there's no room in coop for a mascot. Nor pensioners. I'm NOT looking forward to retiring my current working girls when the time comes, which is part of the reason I'm trying to add some heritage birds to my ISA browns. I'll take a bit of a hit on production if it means less turnover.

Andre's a Mistral Gris. Are CornishX the standard white 8ish-week broiler? Mistral Gris needs 12 weeks, and will probably still dress out smaller. I am interested to see how the meat compares, but will probably stick with the white ones. Can't get excited about keeping fryers an extra month when last year at 8 weeks, I was sooooo ready for ours to go!
