Black mixed breed chicks can have a lot of variation. I know for a fact that all 4 of these chicks are female. They are all black sexlinks, their mothers are Barred Rocks. They all had the same Easter Egger father. They are now 14 weeks old, and are for sure female.

- they ARE not sex linked. They got the "sex" chromosome from th EE, and are EE/0, hemizygous.

I've read it more than a couple of times now. And it just doesn't fit in with black sex linkage and red sex linkage. I'm sorry I don't understand, is there another way you can word it like,

Cuckoo Hen x Solid male= Is 100%cuckoo males and 100% solid females

I thought you said they were sex links let me reread again

Or can you define some of the stuff you say we're not interpreting right, to try to clear it up better

- also, you can tell by the dark feet that they are female, based on your cross.
- they did NOT receive a yellow shank sex linked chromosome from the female. If they had, they would be male.

On the first or second post you say the males have one sex linked chromosome and one not. And the females have one sex linked chromosome, how does that effect the phenotype in common terms? (like black with red on the neck, etc)

I'm really trying to wrap my head around what you are saying.

I think in the common chicken world sex links, means a specific cross, but you are talking about actual chromosomes being sex linked, and not necessarily the phenotype.

Can you re-read my post, so i dont have to go through it all again. Let me know if you have a more specific Q.
Terminology is killing this discussion. A lot of terms are used tongue and cheek, but are not clearly defined. "Sex-linked" because there is ambiguity on the nomenclature of the sex chromosome, i believe is giving people the wrong idea... Giving people the idea that the female has, and is contributing, a different chromosome. But if she gives it to a male and he gives to a male, it's still the same chromosome. Only, in the second cross the male passed it on...
Btw, i have a Master's degree in embryology (developmental genetics). Just letting you know that i know a little about genetics.

When it comes to chickens, sexlinked genes enable males and females to be visually different at hatching. That's all the term 'sexlink' means, when it comes to chickens.
Silver is a sexlinked base color because a silver hen can only pass that silver color gene to her male offspring. Barring is sexlinked because a barred hen can only pass that barring gene to her male chicks. Fast feathering genes are sexlinked because a rooster can only pass that fast feathering gene to his female offspring. Id (dark legs) is sexlinked because a rooster can only pass that gene to his female chicks, but there are other genes besides Id that can cause dark looking legs.

Yellow shanks are not sexlinked. The Id gene (dark leg 'wash') is sexlinked, but only if the male has it and the hen does not. Both the males and the females from that hatch had legs that looked similar. It wasn't until they were a few weeks old, that the males started to get more yellowish legs.

Okay, if the above poster is saying a solid, non-white, non barred rooster (as I'm assuming gena's rooster is as she knows the basics of sex linkage in chickens), over a barred rock hen, does not make sex link chicks, I think we can all safely say this person is not a reliable source when it comes to sex linked genetic in chickens. That's the very foundation of black sex links.
