I would cut WAY down on the scratch. The 16 birds in the flock should only be getting a cup (using an actual measuring cup) per day maximum.

I agree with that. Scratch is a treat and should be rationed out stringently.

I was told with the cold snap we had to give them generously to help keep their body temp up at night... and never gave much thought since grain cost next to nothing for me

Remember treats should not exceed 10% of their feed intake. That equals about 2 Tablespoons per bird per day.

My flock of 26 get 2 cups a day.

That is an old wives tale.

As long as they have eaten they have energy to make it through the night.

I get it.....horrible cold snaps are frightening.
