So my Wyandotte keeps getting bigger and we're new at this so I keep second guessing myself. The others we have definitely look like pullets and our one Cochin definitely looks like a rooster (he is behind this one in the top photo) and even half crowed a couple times already.

The last time I posted a photo of this one it seemed hit or miss so now that it is a lot bigger I want to try again. It was supposed to be a pullet when we got it. I am asking because I swear I heard it also half try and crow a couple times and my Cochin and this one like to get into it vs. leaving the others alone. I think it looks like a pullet based off internet photos but wanted to ask the experts!

Love the looks of the bird but the Cochin rooster is kids and wifes favorite so it will stay no matter what and we have a very small flock (11 total) so cant have two roos.

Thanks

How old is it? It looks mightily like a cockerel to me.

Female, very close to laying if she hasn't already.

We were wondering when they would start laying. We were not sure of their age when we got them (bought from local person who has 100's of chickens). My kids just picked a bunch out they liked the looks of. We had thought they would not be laying for another two months. I dont have nesting boxes setup yet, guess I should get to it sooner vs. later!

So far the chicken does not show male color patterns. Females tend to be evenly laced all over like this bird. Since age is unknown, I would say it looks like a female very close to laying at this time. Once birds have their full waddles like this one, laying seems to be around the corner.

I admit there is still a chance this is a much younger bird that has not yet developed any male feathering and is actually male.

I don't think it's a cockerel, Cockerel would have obvious saddle feathers by now and dark patches of red on wing without any lacing.
Normally I would agree, but this bird just screams cockerel to me for some reason. In the first picture, those top tail feathers are black and shiny and look like they could become sickles. And behind the wings the feathers look shiny and narrow, like the beginnings of saddle feathers. But it could just be an unusual pullet. I can see this one going either way, but I think it is a very late maturing cockerel for now. And hope I'm wrong, because the original poster probably wants a pullet!
