My first two batchs of eggs arrived in January when it was about -25F. One batch, 16 silkie eggs, was frozen solid. Most of them were split open. The other batch was 6 muscovy eggs and 38 chicken eggs of various breeds. 5 muscovy eggs did not develop at all. The other one died around week two. A couple of the chicken eggs were broke, some did not develop and four died withou hatching. But I did get 15 live chicks!
One was a very tiny black silkie that only lived about 3 days. The rest are doing great.
I have eggs from five different mailings in the bators right now. I've candled the first two batches and about 40% clear, 60% developing. They are due to hatch this sunday. I'll candle batch # 3 later this week. The others have only been in about 4 days.
The chicks from the first batch include welsummer crosses (big), a blue silkie, an auracana/light brahma? cross and some spitzhaubens.
I'm guessing I have 5 spitzhauben roosters and 2 hens. The apparent hens are much smaller but they all are developing nice crests. I can see the split combs starting to come on two of the roosters.
