Give me your best advice on roos please

M.sue :

OK got it....sorta like this is my turf, my chicks, I'm the guy. Most generally I'm out in the yard when they are free ranging. They roam around, go about their business and periodically come running if they see me...thinking/knowing I've got treats. If I'm by the house and their by the shed, everyone going about as normal it's fine, just not the "Look, I'm in control" right in front of you.

Yeah. Though I have never actually seen my roo mate my hens. I have seen him do the dance, and try, but he backs off as soon as I take a step in his direction.

I wouldn't stop him if I was outside the run on my deck. By the time I would get over there anyways, it would be done and over with

Ya, my silkie roo still trys to mate with the hens around me.
I just smack him off of them as soon as possible, sometimes it happens so fast, its hard to stop it in time.
He was crushing my poor Japanese pullet today

Hes way to big for her, poor girl couldn't run away fast enough.
My polish roo doesn't try to mate with anyone or at least doesn't try in front of us.
The silkie roo will eventually get the idea, he is "new" after all.

Interesting! I was just wondering if I should stop my roo from mating in front of me. He has been doing that lately when i go in the run. He has never been aggressive towards me but i also dont trust him at all. As soon as I walk in the run or coop, he is watching me like im a hawk! Thinks im gonna hurt his girls i guess lol!

You should stop him from 'boffing' in front of you and assert that you are alpha otherwise he will begin to challenge yoPr

I bought my first 6 chicks this spring and ended up w/ a rooster.....we loved him. He was such a beautiful animal. The neighbors, however, did not love him. When my chicks were young I had some predator problems before I could figure out how to keep them safe. Because of that I closed the door to the coop every night after they had gone to sleep and opened it early in the morning when I went to work. It didn't really help.... the neighbors could hear the rooster from inside the coop. And he crowed all day, all day..... eventually we had to get rid of him. I must say that the hens started laying almost as soon as he left and they have been much less anxious. A rooster is not for everyone that is for sure..... :-)
