Giving a Baytril to my chicken

My chicken has been prescribed Baytril by the vets who want us to give her 1ml of 2.5 strength mixed with 4ml of water. That’s so much liquid to squirt down her throat. We did the first dose this morning and it’s too distressing for her. Does anyone know if you can mix it with less water? Or has anyone successfully put in on food instead?

What does the bottle look like? How much does she weigh? Is it 10% or 2.5% liquid? Baytril is said to taste bitter and they don’t like it. Giving it in the least amount of liquid is easier. If it is 2.5% liquid I would give the 1 ml orally with a syringe, 1/2 ml at a time, letting her swallow.

It’s 2.5% the vet weighed her and said 1ml but that I have to mix it with 4 ml of water which ends up being two small syringes worth. I would to mix it with less water but I don’t want to burn her throat. I would also love to give on bread but again I don’t know if you have to dilute it and then put on bread and if it doesn’t work I’ve wasted a dose.

Many people use the 10% liquid straight orally, so the 2.5% liquid would be much more diluted already. So I would not add the 4 ml of water, but just give it undiluted. 1 ml of fluid is not that much. It may taste bad, but won’t burn her throat. I sometimes mix things in a little scrambled egg, if my chickens like egg, and they take it well. Just yesterday, I gave my hen a small amount of bad tasting worm medicine, and she ate most of a scrambled egg with it. I would try it orally first, but you can also use egg or something like cream cheese (just a bit) to get her to take it.

Thanks that’s helpful to know. I will give in less water and may try in food if she gets too fed up of the syringe. So far it seems to have made her worse as the crop is even more horizontal 🤦🏽‍♀️
