Retired 4 years ago. Our neighbor had several chickens and would give us eggs which were rich and delicious. Then they had to move and couldn't take the birds. They found homes for some, some were killed by predators and we ended up inheriting 5 hens and one insistent rooster I didn't want (at the beginning) but he was so sweet and took such care of the girls, we kept him. Never had chickens before and never thought about having chickens. My husband and I survived building a sturdy coop and enclosure to keep them safe (you know your marriage is sound when you can survive this new free-lance project with all the "how do you want this" "can we change that?"...) We've had them now for a year and a half, acquired a few more for our flock and are enjoying them immensely. But, there is a lot to learn.....and I'm still learning! Have really enjoyed realizing how many "chicken sayings" I used but never really understood till now!
