I've retired onto 10 forested acres in the Pacific Northwest (Washington) and have been thinking about chickens and fresh eggs for 3 years. Now, I'm about to be given 3 laying hens and a coop all ready to go. I need to learn quickly to give them the best home possible. I'll be looking for suggestions about free-range - or fenced for safety. How to best "varmint-proof" their coop and enclosed area. And what problems might I be watching for as they adjust to their new home.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Varmint proof wity 1/2" hardware cloth sealing all openings. Don't use chicken wire.
Install a predator apron.
All latches should be such that a toddler couldn't open them.
Watch for signs of coccidiosis after you get them as they will need to adapt to the new strains on your property.
