Beeksnfeet here, just south of the Cheddar Border in Northern Illinois! Very new to all of this. We are looking to get 3-4 chicks and start our new endeavor. The coop is almost finished and we have so many questions. We are looking for quiet birds, docile and friendly. What are your suggestions? We were told by several others that barred rock and orpingtons are very sweet. Would it be too late in the year to start this project in a month or two? Or do you suggest we wait until spring? Our winters can be very cold and snowy, but do surprise us sometimes. Any and all info will be most appreciated. So glad we joined!

Welcome to BYC, we're glad you joined.

Hi and :welcome

Orpingtons suit the description of the birds that you want, they're very friendly and sweet.
As for the time of year, you can raise chicks any time as long as you have a heat lamp good enough to keep them warm. We have raised chicks in the winter before, and they were ready to lay by the time spring came.

You'd best wait for someone with more experience to talk to you about it though, I don't know much about timing and seasons are a bit different down here and all.

Good luck and enjoy your chickens. :D

Thank you. I was hoping to have chicks sooner, but things just didn't go as planned! Our summer has been so hot that I am fearing a very cold winter.....will have to decide soon if we should wait till spring. Thanks again.
