My wife and I recently bought 5 acres of farmland in Southern Maine and are getting ready to start our flock. We orderd 15 Appenzeller Spitzhauben chicks to be hatched for us, as we're looking to start a flock of about six hens and a rooster. The brooder is all set up in the room over our garage, and I have a large horse stall in my barn I'm going to be turning into a chicken coop with a run outside. This will be our first foray into raising chickens, though I worked on a dairy farm growing up an I'm familiar with livestock.
