I have recently discovered glass in someones poop in my coop, I wasn't sure who it was but I have an idea now. One of my hens is acting very lethargic and has her feathers poofed out. She has been eating and drinking alright but when I felt her crop I felt an odd shaped something in her crop and her crop is looking quite large. The glass coming out in the poop seemed like sea glass, very smooth, but pebbled like saftey glass (same as the small pieces from the many shattered car windows in our neighbours yard

) I have considered doing a crop surgery, Is that the best choice? And what all would I need for the surgery? I have heard superglue is ok for closing the wound, is this true?
Thanks

While i was checking into information about this problem,i came across a site(www.bigdogsporch.com)which addresses this very issue in dogs. The same treatment should work on chickens. Treatment is,purchase cotton balls, make sure they are real cotton balls, NOT cosmetic puffs, dip cotton ball in something they like(yogurt, milk, etc)feed to animal(for a dog under 10 lbs it was 2 balls)for a chicken i am thinking 1/2 - 1 cotton ball, torn into small pieces. Apparently the cotton will wrap around the glass, preventing intestines from damage from glass. This will come out in poop, but watch for blood as this could mean cuts in internal organs. This remedy is used on dogs for bones, glass, sharp objects. Thought i would pass this along, might be an alternative to surgery.

Has anyone ever tried this? I just came home after lunch at a friends and found a glass bulb solar light which was out by the area some of my ducks are in had been smashed by the wind and broken very sharp think light bulb type glass was on the ground. I picked up all I could find but don’t know if there is any I can’t find as it’s in grass and dirt, or if the ducks may have already eaten some...

I have some cotton tips on hand which according to the container are 100% cotton so could pull some of them to pieces, it don’t want to try this unless others have tried it with no harm to the bird from the cotton, especially given I don’t know if they have ingested any...

I just read somewhere else that I should give them grit ASAP, but it is Easter Sunday, so no where open today or tomorrow that I can get grit... none of my ducks have been laying for the last month or two so I don’t have any grit on hand... would egg shell be any use? Or find some really small stones and put them by their feed? I am assuming the grit is to try and crush up any glass

oh no!! I don't know anything about chickens but I didn't want you to feel like you were screaming into the void!! Maybe try creating a new thread? I wish I could help, this sounds really upsetting and nerve-wracking!!! :hugs :hugs :hugs

When I had a duck scare @Ursuline Chick came to my rescue! I think they're maybe well-versed in chickens, maybe if we're lucky & they're online they might have some advice or may be able to refer you to a good place to search for answers! I know its late though so ppl may be in bed already! I'll keep my fingers crossed for your lil birds!

Hi, @graypes I have never dealt with this issue before, however there are probably some really good articles on chickens eating glass in the BYC article section @chick chicks you might want to look up those. Sorry it took so long to get back. Happy Easter and good luck :hugs

In humans, we're supposed to eat soft white bread when we swallow something sharp, and it forms balls around the sharp thing. Maybe try it in chickens?
