i have one pekin duck who I think would benefit from taking this supplement. I’ve already been giving her extra niacin and meloxicam to help with her legs. And they are helping. But I thought I’d add a little of this too. I just can’t figure out a proper dosage. I don’t want to break open and sprinkle capsule contents over a bowl of food because she won’t eat it if I separate her from the flock anyway. and if I don’t separate her, everyone else will eat it so I want to mix a little of the powder from a capsule with a syringe full of water and just give it to her orally.
trying to decide how many doses are in one capsule.
here’s a suggested dosage

so basically majestic waterfowl sanctuary says they break open one capsule for two ducks. is that 250 mg glucosamine per duck?
i’m confused because they also say an adult duck can have 10 mg per kilogram per day so for a 6 pound duck that’s about 25 mg, not 250…..

Okay, let's add to the confusion:
Neither Glucosamine nor Chondroitin can be overdosed - unless you drop a 50lbs bag of that on your duck. (Does that count as overdose?) 😜

I am proud of still having all ten fingers on my hands, despite using dangerous power-tools (saws!), so here is what i do to give my ducks medications:
  • Water soluble stuff: Cook some rice for the ducks and add the medication to the water. Let all of the water be absorbed into the rice and the medication/supplements/vitamins goes straight into the ducks stomach.
For heat sensitive stuff (antibiotics), let the water boil up, add the rice and wait until the water has cooled down, then add the medication. It takes longer for the rice to absorb the liquid, but it will be absorbed completely in the end. You can even use cold water and rice, but that takes a full day for the rice to absorb the liquid.
  • Non water soluble stuff: Do as they describe and sprinkle the powder over some fruits, bananas worked best for my ducks here.
Does these two substances help with Arthritis?
I don't know! Scientists and doctors don't know!
Some folks say there is evidence that it eases Arthritis related pain, skeptics (like me) claim that this is all a placebo effect - which wouldn't work for ducks or other animals, would it?
My wife swears that Glutamine, Chondroitin and Gelatine help her with her joint pain. I tried it and found no difference, my knees hurt during Winter until i have warmed them up by moving them.

Here Blanca Duck is showing the first signs of pain when walking in cold weather. She is over six years old and is waddling even more than usual on cold mornings but that won't stop her for long. After some exercise - running up to the pond, swimming around, climbing back out she is doing just fine until the next cold morning.

Just remember: No water soluble Vitamin or supplement can be overdosed, they just pee it out.
Glutamine, Chondroitin and Gelatine is part of their natural diet, i.e. Chondroitin is made from Chitin, basically insect's exo-skeletons. Ask your ducks if you can overdose meal-worms…
