Hey people! First of all, I have to say that I LOVE THIS SITE! I started w/o knowing anything about chickens and this site told me everything I needed to know.
Well, my ladies are doing great in their new Coop, just got them out of the brooder Friday and you can really tell that they are enjoying the extra space and the sunshine. now the problem is that they seem to like the outside A LOT, because every night I have been struggling to get the girls from the run to the coop. They get really stress out when I try to grab them and they start screaming bloody murder!!! I try giving them treats but I am afraid they won't come to me anymore because they will start associating treats=coop (no good I guess!). Any suggestions? I don't want my girls to be afraid of me, but I have to get them in for the night for their safety. Thank you so much, any words are welcome!!

Mine did the same for about 5 days and then they figured it out. I put a 5 gallon bucket out on its side and in the evening they would all try to squeeze in. I just poured them out of the bucket into the coop, a little silly but... it worked. A few days later they were too big for the bucket and they all moved to the coop. Maybe they just need some time? Best of luck.

Chicks are afraid of the dark., If you leave a small light on, with timer that makes a lot of difference. You can set it for about 10 minutes approx. before dusk and stay on another 10-20 min. giving everyone a chance to get back into the coop.

Hello!
400

Welcome to BYC and the coop! There's a lot of great peeps here! Feel free to ask lots of questions. But most of all, make yourself at home. I'm so glad you decided to join the BYC family. I look forward to seeing you around BYC. :frow You can also try waiting until it is dark and then moving them into the coop. Chickens get in a zombie state, I know sounds syfi. But it's true. That way they wake up in the coop the next morning. Safe, warm and stress free. Good luck with your girls. :)

You guys are all so helpful! I have a brooder light inside the coop to keep them warm (temps at night are dropping into the 50's). I think I am gonna try waiting until is dark and see what happens!! I will keep you guys updated!

:frow welcome to BYC !!

I put mine in a cage in the coop for a week and then let them loose. Today was their first day out and every one went in the coop at night.

My last flock went in in their own instantly. But I think that is also because I started them in the closed coop for a few days first. It took them a little while to venture out. I would do that again next time, much easier. Although the 5 gal bucket of chicken was really cute and silly.

Hey! Thanks so much for asking !!! No.they are not

... But it is much easier to put them inside the coop at night! . For once, I wait until is almost dark out. I don't know if the figured out already that there is no other option, like "crap, we are going in anyway , so may as well not move" or I got a lot faster catching them!
Anyhow, I give them all a treat from my hand once that they are in and they seem to forgive me for chasing them!!
