Goat vets/cost?

If you get two this year and enjoy them than you have something to look forward to the following year to get two more, that's how I do it anyways, every few years I add a couple. We humans often make choices that are better for us but worse on the animals, so I'm glad you are thinking about what the animal need first.

I definitely think calling around for local vets ahead of time is a great idea. Generally, a lot of monthly and daily maintenance can be done by an experienced goat owner. Most shots, hoof trimming, deworming, etc can be done by an owner. However, you will probably need a vet for fecal exams, and it's definitely a good idea to have one on hand for emergencies.

Generally, goats are pretty low maintenance, but it is a good idea to research diet and some of the more common medical conditions goats can suffer from. I agree that avoiding sale barns is a good idea. Also, knowing what vaccines are recommended for goats will help you with your maintenance.

I definitely need to do more research on diet and most especially medical conditions. Haven't done much research on what could go wrong yet. Sounds like I should definitely avoid sale barns then, thanks for the tips you both. And I'll look into the vaccines. Is it basically the same for most goats or does it depend on region? And do they sell them somewhere or?
