Goats

Though I agree that testing is extremely beneficial, and I test all of mine for CL/CAE and Johnes, when someone asks for help with a specific problem in a "read only" format, I rather prefer to start with basics and work toward the more complex.

Asking additional enlightening questions and trying to determine the solution to the existing problem first would prove far more beneficial than jumping right to worst case scenario and then expounding on the reasons for testing your herd for a specific disease. Then going further trying to "save the world" of goats through testing. IMHO the time for that particular discussion is later, not the here and now while this member is seeking specific help for a specific issue.

That being said, I'm sure there ARE very experienced goat owners here on a POULTRY site, however, I would suggest that a person would have much better success looking for help on a forum that is dedicated to the area of expertise the questions are associated with. Goats are after all herd animals & livestock, not chickens or poultry. One does not generally go to a dentist with a vision problem.

As an aside, there are many chicken owners over on BYH, and chicken questions do occasionally come up over there. Go figure :idunno

Thus the reason I am a member of BYH, TEG & BYC. A broad spectrum of knowledgeable members. I admire each site as a well as the fact that BYH does indeed have a dedicated forum specializing in (emergency, diesease, cure) like byc but with 4 legged animals. And a score of kind folks who have helped me tremendously with my 20 goats so much!
I usually post my questions or concerns on both sites for more chances of knowledgeable goat enthusiasts to find my postings as quickly as possible especially if one of my goats are in Dyer straights.

Well, there was the question and I answered with my experience. In my experience, those options (normal mastitis and CAE) are the most likely answers.

It is wonderful there are tons of forums out there. I don't belong to all of them. I only belong to this one. I barely have a chance to read this one; so I stick with one. That works the best for me.

If someone asks a question and I know something about that, I try and say what I know. I think it's wonderful that you have another perspective and see things differently. I can't write down what you think; you have to do that, and it's great that you did. In the meantime I wrote down my perspective. Sorry if you disagree with my point of view; I completely understand. I hope I really don't bother you, and I'm sorry if I do, but there it is: I can only reply with my own personality and experience.

Hello all.... Great discussion going here.
Thought I'd let you know I've been in touch with him thru pm...He's trying to get the vet out but with the holidays it's been difficult. From the conversation I've had with him I'm fairly sure he's dealing with chronic mastitis. Heard from him this morning and mom and babies are doing OK but I'm waiting to hear if the redness has worsened. I lost a doe to chronic mastitis last year and the symptoms appear the same from what he said. I have continued to encourage him to keep trying the vet and discuss all known options with the vet.
Keep him in your thoughts, this is difficult for him. :(

Thank you FMF... I too had considered mastitis as the most likely cause (as opposed to CAE), however without more detailed information, I withheld that diagnosis. So happy that you reached out to him to try and provide in-depth and detailed help. :bow:thumbsup I'm certain that he appreciates it greatly. :clap I hope that IS the issue and that he's able to possibly reverse any damage that hasn't become permanent.

I did let him know y'all were worried and that I had updated. I think he can only be on here a short time. Not sure tho! Babies are bottle feeding well and he's still trying to get a vet out. Seems to be a very difficult task.
Please continue to send good thoughts and prayers his way.:hugs
