Hi -- been following this discussion not swo much to send them out but to ask how they do it when I get them shipped.
Just a couple of things. First a question: Do most send them ordinary and are they ok to go that long?? Or courier be a better bet and safer or is it too costly?

Next an observation regarding the method used by the buckeye link. They said they wrap in kleenex.

Now one time when moving I had a friend pack for me when I was returning from a move east. When I packed going there I used newspapers I packedc my dises tighly and I had no breakage. When my friend did it I didn't watch and she used paper towels and my mothers best china was totally in pieces. My guess was the paper towels could not absorb the impact like newspaper.

So I would be inclined to think that the tissue would be useless. I wondered about the bubble wrap too because the person said they always had breakage. Apparently there is something new out there which is air pockets. And I wondered if anyone has used them. OI would be inclined to put them inside the egg carton and close it tightly. Wrap in bubble wrap and put some more of these in the box surrounding the carton. Then mark it heavily as FRAGILE and send by courier. My inclination is to think that the longer they are in transport the more can go wrong.

I ship and get shipped butteflies and the larva and never have a problem but we pack entirely differently with cold packs and stuff. But always overnight by courier.

But would like to hear more success stories of how they are packed and if anyone has used the air pockets.

Just my two cents...

I had miserable luck shipping eggs inside eggs cartons, even when well padded, and even when the carton was inside a box that was placed inside a second padded box! And I never, ever cover the whole egg with bubble wrap, because eggs need fresh air.

I had about 99% success last year using the method recommended by eggbid.com: http://www.eggbid.com/help/packeggs.cfm

Dianne,
the one your talking about with the egg carton (with the foil-that part was good), i noticed what your talking about and i liked the other bubble wrap idea better. i think when there is little mobility the eggs have a better chance of breaking (ie in a carton) or in somecases the eggs can move about in the carton just enough to break. i had some shipped to me individually wrapped in foam and then in bubble wrap and all of them loose in the packing peanuts and thats the only one there was no breakage. with the egg carton, there were 2 broke out of 9 and only 3 hatched. the other one i got 100% hatch, dont know if that has anything to do with it. im, also have a pretty good idea on how to get them packed, its just the next part that confuses me. whats next? what type of shipping is best? how do you know how much it costs....doesnt it vary from package to package?

I have recently sent out 8 dozen eggs to 8 different people all over the country. (I'm in TX). I've sent from CA to FL and up north too. I havent had anyone tell me that they've received a broken egg. Here's what I do.

I get plastic bags (like wal mart, target, etc) and put a bunch of them in the bottom of the box for cushion. Then on top of that, I put a lot of shredded paper. I roll each egg into paper towels and then secure with packing tape. I place the eggs in the center of the box and surround with a ton more shredded paper. I pack the shredded paper down the sides of the box and put extra on top.

I close the box up and giggle slightly to make sure there is no movement inside. Tape it up and that's it! I'm planning on taking some pictures and posting them on my website soon. I've been very pleased, and so have my customers.

First of all we only use standard size shipping boxes (that you can get free from ebay and the USPS)

The FRB1 for 6 eggs
#7 box for a dozen

we don't use the larger flat rate box as it isn't tall enough to pack the layers we use

In our experience the standard size boxes seem to go thru the USPS better. Really when you think about it they are standard size boxes for a reason, the sorting and mail moving equip. is set up for that. The more they go thru the automated system the less people handle them- and drop them and throw them etc etc etc.

We use two layers of large bubble wrap on the bottom of the box
a layer of packing peanuts under the eggs
Each egg is wrapped in a full 12" x 12" sheet of small bubble wrap
The eggs are in the center of the box and packing peanuts all around the outside.
a layer of packing peanuts over the eggs
two layers of large bubble wrap over that.

In all the years shipping eggs it's very rare we have reports of broken eggs.
