So when were first got the baby chicks they seems super docile, now they are so spunky and a half of them hate to be handled in any way (they do settle but there's lots of screaming before they realize we're not gonna kill them). Is this typical of chicks to become more "sassy" as they gain their confidence?

It hasn't even quite been two weeks with us yet and I know these things take time, I'm just so curious.

Update to this: I'm not sure if it correlates or not... but today for example I've been at work and they've been chilling in their brooder box and haven't had much "exploration time," perhaps they're just naturally more antsy and ready to run? 😂

Some chicks like a cuddle, some don't. I find sitting with them and letting them come to you makes a lot of difference. Treats don't hurt either :D

I'd say yes to normal. And around 3weeks their feathers are growing in and can be painful when held. But some do like to be right up and cuddle, some don't. They are naturally prey animals, and when coming from.above a brooder they run. Sitting on grou mnd with them if you're able to let them out in say a dog pen, (ratty sheet helps mess clean up) to help them get used to you? Just some suggestions. Not sure of your set up. Good luck!

I try not to approach them from above as that is how some predators attack. I like to slowly put my hand down to their level. Sometimes I will put a little feed in my hand to entice them as well! As @redinator mentioned they won`t all be as friendly but some will be! I have numerous lap chickens! Best of luck to you! 😊

Yes. They go through a teenage phase where interacting with humans is embarrassing and makes them look bad in front of their brooder-mates.

You already got some good tips, but I'll just add to wait it out. Typically, the ones that were friendly as littles come around again as they mature.

Very true!

I wanted to add, before giving any sorts of treats make sure they have chick grit (not poultry grit or oyster shells). Keep treats simple; boiled egg yolk or mealworms . . they love both.

Thank you for all the input!

Seems like so far we're doing most things right. We have a place they can hang outside of the brooder where I can sit with them, and yes they love treats! They have chick grit, they eat it well.
Going to keep at it, so far one is very cuddly and the rest could care less, but we'll see!

I think the hardest part of all this is... it's my luck that the one I love thats sweet and cuddly turns out to be a roo (we can't keep them past 9 months in our current neighborhood)... but I'm going to knock on wood and not put that into the universe! 😂
