We have a pair of Embdens. Last year she went broody and we let her try to hatch 12 eggs. We candled them in the night as she was way more docile then, and it was easier to see too. 5 of the eggs were duds. the other 7 grew and grew. Then 2 turned all red all of a sudden. The last 5 grew into fully formed babies 1 hatched and was stolen by a magpie the other 4 grew babies but they never hatched, they died in the egg. We just got our first goose egg of the year. we are checking it tonight to see if its fertile. What can we do differently so we get babies? They have a new pen that is magpie proof. Can I put geese eggs under my broody hens? We have 20 hens. Can they turn them? Goose eggs are huge! I have put duck eggs under chickens and we are trying it with turkey eggs as well this year. I really want baby geese this year. They are a very bonded pair and are really wonderful and nice, unless she is sitting on eggs. Any help is welcome.
hope it helped and geese that brood first time and lay first time shouldent really sit on eggs espically since she would have her own eggs and yea magpie problem is common here too so keep an eye on the babies for the first week till the 2nd week .
