Here in Idaho its been crazy wet and rainy. Thursday it is supposed to warm up (68 70) and Id like to take my week and a half olds outside for a little bit. Will they be warm enough out there for a little while or do I need to keep them in? They have most of their top wing feathers right now but they seem so eager to explore outside their brooder. Thanks in advance!

i let my week olds out into a rabbit hutch to explore & when they all curled up to sleep i brought them back inside to warm up again, i done this the first few days & now they are 3 wks old & they spend most of the day outside, if its freezing cold then i put a light in the hutch so if they get too cold they can go & warm up & then bring them inside at nite.

I can't wait to let mine out to explorer but I need to make a critter resistant exploring cage for them. My cats have been banned from the room the chicks are in but they do go out side

I let a few of my 10 day old babies out yesterday and they loved it. They did stay very close to me as if they were afraid to stray to far from Mama, but they were happily pecking in the mulch and nibbling on some grass and weeds. When I put them back in the brooder they were excitedly chirping and it was is the they were telling the others: YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHERE WE'VE JUST BEEN!!!

LOL!

Those of you who have let your littles out, what type of chicks do you have?

I have been thinking about doing the same this weekend. They are 10 days old today. It should get up to around 70 this weekend, but I have assorted bantams so mine are tinys!!! So I wasn't sure if they were too small.

I started letting them outside at about this age last year. At this age I would only let them out for about 15 - 20 mins of supervised playtime in the yard. I made sure it was a sunny day that is not windy.

Oh wow, another person from Idaho! Yes it has been obnoxiously rainy and cold. It's like Spring changed its mind and called for a do-over.

I just put my 5 week olds outside today since it almost got to 60. I think the daytime temps are ok for brief jaunts, but the nights are still dipping below 40. I think you can take your babies outside when it hits 60, but I wouldn't leave them out for longer than 20 minutes. Just keep an eye on them, they'll let you know when they're too cold to have fun outside anymore.

Crossing my fingers to get my coop done this weekend. So tired of my bathroom being full of chickens!

Its been rainy here in Oregon for the past few days. (No surprise there) I am looking forward to mine discovering their outside world too. Maybe in another week or two when the temps are above 60.
