Going through cute & fuzzy duckling withdraw...

are you sure you want broody guineas? After having only 4 guineas for a half year, I am praying my guinea hen doesn’t go broody ever :fl

I had some eggs this year, then lost my egg layer. Cute little eggs aren’t they!?
So tell me about your broody guinea plz! I want to know what to expect. If it’s likely I’ll get chicks I won’t order anymore. I really want to hatch them myself if I can get a solid egg supply early enough. I’d like to hatch the guinea in late March early April so they get large enough to free range mid-late summer. I wanted to try a gaggle of free guinea like my father-in law had. He never used a coop. 15 years later there is still a gaggle of them running about the farm. It’s just not a reality here I guess

I’ve had no broody guineas. I had 4 guineafowl, 2 cocks and 2 hens. A couple months ago, a guniea hen disappeared entirely, so we were down to 2 cocks and 1 hen.

The guinea cocks fight, and then after they fight they fight some more. After one is a definite winner, it continues to chase and beat the loser.

when I feed my birds in the morning, the guineas rush at my chickens until the chickens leave the food. They stand there and between the three of them they guard the food of 15 chickens until I chase them off.

A week ago, a dog killed a chick, ripped open a chicken and grabbed my guinea hen. She was downstairs in my basement for two days, and would drink electrolyte water but not eat. She screamed whenever she heard the guineas outside. On the third day, she stopped drinking the water I offered her and instead pecked my fingers if I moved too close for her comfort. She seemed to have perked up, even though she wouldn’t eat. I couldn’t find any external injuries, she wouldn’t let me go near her anymore and I figured she was lonely, so I put her back outside to see if she would eat with the others. She ran out there and gobbled down bread, she seemed instantly better and I was glad.

then the two guinea cocks started fighting again. I tried to intervene, and my rooster tried to intervene, but to no avail. Eventually, one got hurt on the head, and now he stands a bit away from the other two, but won’t let me near him to check out his head. my guinea hen walks around with the others, eats and drinks, but otherwise stands there as well.

the other guinea cock still struts around and screams nonstop, chases my hens around for no discernible reason, and has now taken to pulling out my roosters tail feathers, which were just starting to get long. :barnie

they might (emphasize the might) be keeping predators away, but they’re driving me nuts and my cats still come home with ticks!

I think guineas can be awesome, if they’re your thing. I never actually wanted guineas in the first place, but my mom got them anyways. i personally prefer to see them in the National Geographic, not in my yard. Maybe they just don’t mix well with chickens

Sorry that was very long, but nobody else will listen to me venting about these birds!
I enjoyed reading your post! I’ve had very little trouble with the Guinea Here other than the predators eating the crap out of them. They follow me around like puppies. They do run off my one black pussycat. But I’m wondering if that’s because he looks like a mink? I haven’t never seen my guinea fight!???I did keep them caged and in a coop for several months until they were the size of a Batam chicken or larger. Most all of the survivors fly without problem, I think they like to compete to see who flies the best. Sadly two of my six guinea were pinioned. I’ll never buy pinioned birds again.

You are right they can be quite annoying at times. Typically it’s the females doing a buckwheat call constantly. The whole reason I got into the birds was to keep the tick population at bay. I bought two ducklings literally on my way out the door after ordering 20 guinea keets. I would’ve never dreamed that the ducks would’ve stole my heart the way they did, I just absolutely love them. They’ve become my new hobby, which is a lot cheaper than old Land Cruiser’s Porsche’s and silly old motorcycles!

I’m even going to downsize my garage build to accommodate more ducks and birds. My brother and the rest of my family and friends now call me Dr. Dolittle and think I’ve lost my mind

my guineas don’t fly unless they’re trying to get away from me. I actually thought they had troubles flying like chickens, until one day I was watching National Geographic and saw a gaggle of guineas take to the air, and I was amazed. I never thought my eight chickens would snatch my heart like they did, but here I am now with 15 brand new chickens... I even paid for their coop myself!

They made me an adult... :gig
