Thanks for the welcome!

I just realized I have another quick question...I want to get them in the spring, I was just going to go on the local classifieds and find some when the time came. BUT I need to build them a house first. Assuming I am getting some pullets or full grown chickens, when shoudl I aim to be getting them? Is it best to get them in their new home before april? or may, or does it really matter? The reason I care is because we just moved into our first home, and I ahven't ahd time to organize my garage into a proper workshop, so I need to do that before I can start building things.

THanks all :)

I would build the coop first. You'll want the chicks out of the brooder & it is best to have the coop ready.
I got my first chicks the first weekend in June last year & started getting eggs in Oct. I have gotten 3-4 eggs a day since.
I plan to add 3-4 chickens this May again so that I get reliable laying in winter next year.

I didn't even want chickens that much when I started - I wanted ducks, but the man of the house couldn't understand having ducks and no chickens so I got the chickens to make the duck ownership "sensible".
My advice - make the coop & run big enough for three times more chickens than you think you want. That way it will be at least 3 years before you have to rebuild. (Like me, I am going to build a duck/chicken duplex - with a separate yard - after having built them individual housing last year.) I thought I would be "all set" with the flock I have now, but if you're already caring for some chickens, more chickens is not harder...

My chicken math/duck math = the chickens all come when I call "Chicken. Oh Chicken" so they are ONE animal. The ducks don't answer to individual names, they answer to "Quackers". One name, one animal. I have chicken, not chickens. (Not the traditional chicken math, but much simpler.)

Good luck. The lifestyle is wonderful. I have yet to have a morning - even these frigid ones - that I don't look forward to going out to visit my flock. They have enriched my life in ways I could never have imagined.
