Hello all! I'm new to BYC! I also have a question/request for any advice you want to give! I'll be going to Haiti soon to help start a sustainable chicken project. What kind of coop would work well in this environment of strong winds and rains? If anyone has any advice then please share it, everything is helpful. Thank you! ^_^

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Sturdy, water proof, good ventilation and draft free would be paramount with winds and rain. Here is a lovely section from the learning centre on housing your chickens ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/housing-and-feeding-your-chickens

Wishing you the very best of luck with your new project in the future.

Be sure to ask all the questions you need to, everyone here to help and very friendly.

Enjoy BYC :frow

Hi, welcome to BYC!

Yorkshire has given you some good advice on coop needs. That sounds like quite the ambitious project. What breed of chickens will you raise?

Good luck on your project. Keep us posted on how it goes!

Hi! Welcome!

What an eggciting and wonderful project to be involved in! If you will have meat birds, layers and brooders you might want to choose more than one design. A cinder block or cement footing might be advised for sturdiness. Flooding and drainage may be a concern during the rainy season. Best of luck with this endeavor! It would be great if you started a thread so we can follow you on your journey.

Welcome to the BYC flock! We are very glad you decided to join us!

What a great project! Is this part of an organized project through an agency/company or is this a personal endeavor?

Thanks for all the suggestions! :) I really appreciate it as the environment I'm used to working in is dry and hot, no experience with rain or winds.

I'll answer the few questions I got here, sorry if there's a way to tag a user but I'm not sure how ;)

We'll be using some local chicken breeds as they're more resistant to the diseases there unfortunately they generally don't lay as many eggs as our breeds and cross breeds here do. Maybe some extra protein will help that.

I'm going with a group called 'Friends Of Haiti' it's more of a personal endeavor than a company one. I've worked with the Peace Corps in Africa on chicken projects before so it's not my first rodeo however every place is different so I'm always nervous about what will and will not work. Things I learn from somewhere else may not apply at all to my new destination!

Ok, I have another question! I only have experience raising layers but this group is interested in raising both meat birds and layers. Is there anything wildly different about raising meat birds? Do they need different accommodations or types of food? Thanks for all of your help! You guys are always so nice. :)
