There is no reason for any animal to harm, injure or kill. There is no real bad dogs without real bad owners. The owners need to be reported for future complaints. That holds them accountable for their behavior. Without the report you are saying it was really OK and it never happened. What if the next kill is your next brood, cat, dog or family member. There are animals that do that, right?

So sorry for your loss! Dogs are some of the worst predators because they are smart, persistent, and darn good diggers. Where a possum or raccoon might be frightened off, a dog may be reluctant to go & then may return later to finish the job. That said, it is so true that it's the owner of the dog who is the source of the problem, because they are not supervising their animal. If your chickens kept getting out and pooping all over your neighbor's porch, he/she would be right to be angry at you (and not at the chickens, b/c pooping is just one of the things they do) for the same reason. So if your neighbor wanted to put you on notice that you not supervising your chickens & making them porch-poopers is unacceptable behavior, then he/she should file a complaint against you, or at least a complaining letter to you (and keep a copy for their records). I agree with the other member here that you should totally file something. Many municipalities have ordinances that deal with dogs that run loose or damage other people's pets and livestock. Your neighbors should be put on notice that allowing their dog to go around unsupervised, killing chickens & other critters, is not acceptable. It is not something that responsible pet owners do.

Check your local laws. Here is what the City of Raleigh, NC has to say about it:

(3) If any dangerous dog or potentially dangerous dog shall, when unprovoked, kill, wound or assist in killing or wounding any domestic animal or pet, the owner of the dog shall pay a $250 civil penalty. The Animal Control Section shall confiscate and, after the expiration of a ten-day waiting period exclusive of Sundays and holidays, destroy the dangerous dog. For each subsequent violation, the owner shall pay a civil penalty of $500.

That's so sad. A friend had six hens, one taken by a hawk and the other five by a neighbor's dog that got out. Her yard wasn't fenced and the hens were free-ranging at the time. I hope you have better luck with the next batch.

i did know i could call the city on them!!! that a big fine, i would only do that if dug under my fence to get them but he is just to fat and lazy to do that , and he is only out for a few min a day my coop is on the other side so he doesn't see it unless his owner are in my yard with him and that is never going to happen again, but it is something to think about!! i think just not talking to them or letting there kid come over and play with all the neat stuff we have!!

Why doesn't the chicken owners take care of the problem instead of calling government agencies? While your flock dies, you call, and wait, and hope something can be done. But your chickens are dead and the curlpit is still running around looking for other fun to have. I just don't get it. You get chicks and depend on somebody else to protect them. That should fall in a list of your responsibilities. I let my dog kill a possum yesterday not because it killed a chicken of mine. It was just because it may have wanted to knowing their linage and attitudes.

Mercy folks, take care of your own. You do your children. I dare anybody to mess with a mother's children. What not the chicks?

You need to file a complaint and at a minimum, take them to small claims court for the cost of the lost chickens and cost of replacing them, and I would go for the cost of the additional security for your animals. You keep saying these people are nice and you dont want to do anything. They are not nice, as you also said, you always give and they always take. They have a sense of entitlement that they dont deserve. They have NO regard for your property or your rules. If you dont do anything about it now they will continue as they have in the past. They need to be held accountable for their actions and the actions of their dog.

Don't waste your time and in small claims court. Call animal control and report it. Then, go to your nearest farm supply store and buy a good quality AC fencer-not one of the crappy solar units (we own a horse farm and have gone through a half dozen of the solar units). You'll want some electrified mesh fencing that is either white or yellow in color at most farm supplies and some plastic stand-out fence posts to run the electric fence. Once your coop and run are in proper order again set up your fence and fencer. Not only will it protect from the pets of the stupid, it will also help eliminate a lot of other predator problems.
