Sooo, I have 4 baby chicks right now and one is a GLW and all the other chicks are already growing their tail feathers but the GLW seems to be slow at it. They got sexed and were 95% hens. And I was wondering if GLW's just (both genders) grow their tail feathers later... or what??

how old? are they all wyandottes? my GLW are 2 weeks old, 4 look to be females with the long tails and lots of wing feathers, some back feathers coming in, and the other one looks to be a boy, he's got maybe half the feathers that they do.... i think i have a pic around here somewhere...

ohh I'd love a GLW, I have a BLW chick & she has a lot of tail feathers growing in & is 2wks old as well. So do hens tend to have more feathers at first, than roo's?

in most cases yes, from what i've read and heard from others. there are some breeds (like silkies!!! grrrrr) that you can't tell by feathering. i know from mine that i've hatched and raised, the ones i've guessed by feathering i've been right on them all... except for my silkie! the only roo i've ever managed to pick out a bucket lol. i also had a couple favorelle xs that i couldn't tell at all with.

I raised 18 Columbian Wyandottes last spring. The one rooster I had ordered, feathered in just like the hens. I had two that had mostly fuzz and not many feathers still at 8 weeks. Most people would have said they were roosters, because of late feathering. They both turned out to be hens. I would say you really can't tell this early.

I have a GLW who I got as a young adult, she had no tail when I got her and when it finally did start to come in, it was so slow to regrow I almost thought she wasn't going to get one!
