I just hatched some white Leghorn eggs and know where I can get free RIR roosters. I've heard that Golden Buff/Red Star's are the best brown egg layers. I have an incubator so I figure I could hatch some myself. Does it matter what sex of what breed you use? Like would a have to use a male RIR and a female Leghorn or could I do vice-versa too? If I bought day old Golden Buff chicks from the hatchery are the breedable since they are hybrids? Thanks!

Not quite, it wouldn't work. White Leghorn X RIR would make a white bird....probably with leakage.

They would need to make a special strain which was not on extended black but was also silver.

Aaah! That would make more sense as to why they're called Production Reds
