I saw a picture recently that someone posted of a hen and I was struck with how beautiful she was. What are they like? Are they just eye candy or are they useful layers .... are they friendly, get on well with the others... Love some input...

mine lay consistly, are friendly(one of first in line to get treats) no a leghorn sized egg, but a good medium sized egg almost daily.

I have always thought Golden Campines were so beautiful! That is probably the prettiest one I have seen. I am glad to hear yours are friendly. Hmmm, may just have to get a few!

I have two golden campines in my group of 8 'big girls'. They are 21 weeks old and are really cool chickens - loads of personality.

When they were really little, they were the most skittish of the chicks (the others are more heavier breeds - wyandottes and dominiques) so I thought they would be the shyest when grown, but that isn't the case. They are the first to come up to see what the chicken lady has brought them for treats, and are not shy at all.

As they got older, they were the first chickens to cluck. They 'talk' to themselves constantly. They aren't obnoxiously loud or anything, just like they keep a running commentary going under their breath all the time. It's pretty funny, especially since the other girls are mostly quiet.

They are also very quick to defend themselves - again, not in a negative way, but they will confront the dogs and have made sure they all know who is the boss (in case you were wondering, that would be the chickens...)

They are pretty too - I got my girls from Meyer.

All in all, I really like them - they are not agressive but assertive, and extremely curious and good-natured. Now, if they would just give me some eggs, I could say they were just perfect!

Mine was supposed to be a hen but turned out to be a rooster. He is about 2.5 months old. He is smaller than the rest of the bunch (dominique, leghorns, easter egger, star) but is the most outgoing. He likes to crow a lot and is very talkative. He likes to be held the least but is the most fun to watch. He is the leader of the pack. He is very pretty and when they are chicks they look like cheetahs. He was the best looking chick.

Mdbucks, that was the pic I saw! Beautiful birds! I love the second picture - the pullets rich colouring against that background is stunning! Oh, decisions, decisions, got to try and include a couple of those.... How do they cope with confinement? We would have a pretty big run for them to wander around in... no way we can do free range here, they wouldn't last two days!
