I ordered Silver Appleyard ducklings from Holderreads and was given two Golden Cascades in the batch. From what I understand about GCs you can only tell the sex of their offspring when they mate with other breeds of ducks. So, these babies being pure, I am curious about how soon I can tell gender. There is a distinct ring around the neck of one of them, but they are still with down. I have tried to google images of GC ducklings but I am not having much luck. Is this just strange coloring or will the down feather out as shown? Or do I just need to wait for the quack?

The GC's are in the back:

Maybe you should ask this over in the Duck forum where the duck experts hang out. You can ask a moderator to move your post. Unfortunately I know nothing of Cascades.

I figured I should have after I posted it, but I couldn't figure out how to move it so I just asked over there too. Sorry :)

Mine turned out to both be males. One of them died so now I have 5 S.A. females and one GC drake. This spring they started laying so I gave some eggs to a friend for incubating. I spoke with Dave Holderread and he said that the GC can only be autosexed when they are crossed with another breed of duck so the only way you could tell the sex of a pure GC duckling is the old fashioned way. I will be curious to see what the SA GC crossed babies look like.
