Im thinking about getting some golden comets because of there good nature and egg laying abilities. I am going to have a mixed flock of 4: black australorp, buff Orpington, barred rock, and now maybe a golden comet?!! Just wondering if the golden comet will be good in a heavy mixed flock...? Or should I get a New Hampshire red or Rhode Island Red? They need to be gentle breeds

Golden Comet is one of a number of labels under which some hatcheries market their Red Sex Links. They are produced by crossing heavier dual purpose breeds (red gene rooster X silver gene hen). Not only can the offspring be sexed by color from hatching (males are whitish, females are reddish), but they are egg laying machines, outlaying either dual purpose parent breed. It's one of the interesting quirks of hybridization. They will do just fine with your other dual purpose breeds.

Actually, Red Sex Links like Golden Comets are usually more docile than either New Hampshires or Rhode Island Reds, but they may not be quite the lap pets that your Black Australorps and Buff Orpingtons will be.
